Tips For Entering The First Day Of A New Job

When it comes to a new job, there are a lot of overwhelming aspects; after all, even before you can get a new job, you have to update your resume, search for jobs that you think will be right for you, interview for a number of jobs, go through 2nd interviews, wait to get hired, and then finally be able to begin. By the time most people reach the point where they are actually starting a new job, they have stopped planning in advance;, this is quite natural, as the amount of planning that goes into getting a new job often overshadows the planning that goes into a successful first day – but the first day of a new job is extremely important as well, so once you have landed at new job, make sure you keep these tips in mind!

Oftentimes when you enter a new job, the person who will be overseeing you at this new job will tend to forget a lot of important things that they should be telling you, which can put you in a position down the road where you end up looking deficient; because of this, your first focus on your first day at a new job should be asking as many questions as you can so that you can get a full understanding of what your job and your responsibilities entail.

One of the most difficult aspects of having a new job is being around an entirely new group of people, but if you use the first day to try to get to know as many of your coworkers as possible, chatting with them in the hallways, going to their desks, and perhaps even going out with them for a drink or a quick bite to eat after work, you will minimize the negativity of this aspect.

And of course, another one of the toughest aspects of starting a new job can indeed be unfamiliarity with your work environment. Use your first day on a new job to personalize your new workspace as much is possible, and this will make the subsequent days on this new job a whole lot easier to transition into!

Is A Business Degree The Most Valuable Degree For Me?

If you are going to be entering college soon - or if you are already in college and are trying to decide what you want to major in - one of the degrees that will probably stand out to you as a 'good, solid choice' is a business degree. After all, 'business' covers so many areas, and even if you do not know what you want to do after college, there is a good chance you will be able to use a business degree to help you get there - right?

Actually, as it turns out, as business degree might not be as valuable as it once was - and here is why.

Over the years, Business has grown into the major that students tend to choose when they do not quite know what they would like to do after school, and in addition to there already being lots of people interested in business, this creates a situation where large numbers of students are in every single class. Because the professors who teach these classes teach several classes each week - and because all of these classes have a large number of students - these professors are unlikely to hand out any "writing" assignments that are terribly difficult; which has been proven lately to be a mistake, as companies are looking to hire employees who know how to write!

A business degree can still be a valuable thing to have if you are truly interested in business - but you should seriously consider pairing your business degree with a degree in another area of study that will require you to do a lot of writing in order to obtain a degree. Even though such majors as English, History, or Philosophy have long been seen as degrees that do not have much practical application in "the real world," the starting income for those who have such degrees is actually higher these days than for those with business degrees - so you should keep this statistic in mind when it comes time for you to select your major!

Providing Good Customer Service

One of the most important things in order for you to achieve success in your business will be for you to treat your customers well; after all, customers have plenty of choices when it comes to who they will give their time and money to, and if you are not careful, it will be easy for you to fall out of favor with them - but while it is quite easy to understand exactly why good customer service is important, it can be much more difficult at times to know exactly what you should aim to do in order to provide good customer service.

When a customer visits you in your store (or even when they call you - or even when they visit your website!), you will hope for them to make a purchase, but one thing you will want to make sure of is that you do not harass them in your efforts to nudge them in this direction; learn to help your customers as much as they need, but to do so in such a way that they do not feel that you are "pushing" them to buy.

Another big part of having success in business (even though this might seem counterproductive on the surface!) is that you make it easy for people to make returns and exchanges; a lot of times, customers will end up with the wrong product through no fault of their own, or will end up with a product that is defective, and when you are able to build a reputation with customers of being a place that works with them when this happens, they will be far more likely to turn your way when it is time to shop.

And always giving your customers a place they will want to come back to will be the biggest thing of all for customer service, and this means treating them with respect and always making them feel welcome each time they step into your store.

As you go through all the things you will do in order to have success in business, make sure you keep customer service in mind - always realizing that this is as important as anything else when you want your business to thrive.

If You Are Going Camping, Make Sure You Bring A Sleeping Pad!

Regardless of whether you are taking a primitive camping trip (where you hike out into the wilderness where there is no food, no running water, and no bathroom) or a camping trip at a campsite, you will probably say (or hear someone say) that you are "roughing it." And while part of the fun of going camping is certainly the fact that it allows you to get out into nature and "rough it" a little bit, you also do not want to make yourself so uncomfortable that the effects of roughing it carry over into your everyday life.

One of the big mistakes people make when camping is that they bring a sleeping bag and a tent, but they do not bring a sleeping pad - which leaves them sleeping on the rocky ground. While the sore muscles, the bug bites, and the minor scrapes from camping will fade quickly, the pain in your back from sleeping in rocks might last much longer than you want a souvenir from your camping trip to last! Here are a couple great options to keep in mind if you want to be smart about camping and bring a sleeping pad with you.

The Wenzel Convoluted Camp Pad: The advantage of the Wenzel Convoluted Camp Pad is that it is not a blow-up pad, which makes it a much sturdier and surer option than taking something that may leave you with no sleeping pad at all when it gets punctured by a branch or a batch of thorns!

The Alps Mountaineering Self Inflating Pad: Of course, the benefit of the Alps Mountaineering Self-Inflating Pad is that it is more comfortable than a pad that does not have air in it; at the same time, however, it can also be a less sure option, as it can get punctured or ripped, so even though it is more comfortable, you will have to decide whether you are willing to risk it!

Regardless of which of these options you choose to go with, you will be happy to have a high-quality sleeping pad underneath you - instead of being stuck sleeping on rocks and uneven ground!

The Best Investment Books, For Every Investor

Hundreds of new investment books are published annually. Some of these books claim to be the investing equivalent of a miracle drug, helping you to get rich quick. Other books are full of principles that purport to be "tried and true." Some books are all about playing the market right now, and others are all about playing the market for the long term. Some of these books have been written by immensely successful investors, and quite frankly, others have been written by investors whose advice you would never take if you could see their portfolio. So the question becomes: How do I know which books are the right books? The answer to this question is actually quite simple: forget about all these books published in the last couple years, and go back to the ones that have stood the test of time. While there are certainly valuable books that have been published over the last few years, these long-standing books have been proven to be absolutely invaluable, and they will help you lay a great foundation. Whether you are a new investor or have been building your portfolio for ages, these three books are full of wisdom and advice that can help you moving forward.

1) The Intelligent Investor: This book by Ben Graham was published in 1934, and it is still considered a must-read for every investor. In fact, Warren Buffett has called this book "the best investing book ever written."

2) The Essays Of Warren Buffett: And speaking of Warren Buffett, this book contains his collected essays, arranged by topic and relevance. While you certainly cannot go wrong reading Buffett's thoughts on investing, this book is a great starting point, as it will help you in every area of investing.

3) Common Stocks And Uncommon Profits & Other Writings: Philip Fisher wrote this excellent collection of the fifteen qualities of an excellent business. These thoughts from one of the greatest financial minds in history will certainly aid you in expanding your own portfolio.

Many people consider to the stock market to be something a lot like gambling, and they think anyone who makes money at it is just plain lucky, but by following the tips of these men who knew how to make the market work for them, you can start to do the same yourself.

Two Great Summer Reads (That Are Even Better Together!)

When it comes to summer, one of the favorite pastimes is kicking back – on the beach, or by the pool – and reading a great book; but just because a book is a “great book” does not necessarily mean that it is a great summer book, as a great summer book should be short enough to be read in bits and pieces while being absorbing enough to keep you mesmerized. While there are certainly plenty of books that fit this description, here are two books in particular – and when you read these two books together, the effect will even be amplified!

One of these two books falls into the category of "classics" (after all, it is always best to blend a classic with a modern novel!), and you may have even ready it before; it is The Old Man and the Sea. Lots of high school students who have to read this book for class fail to grasp why it is so highly regarded – but read this book during a lazy summer day while relaxing by a pool or on the beach, and you will surely understand!

The modern novel that is such a tremendous compliment to The Old Man and the Sea is The Great Lenore, which received tremendous reviews upon its publication this summer. The Great Lenore is the story about a woman who is falsely reported dead, and who uses this as an opportunity to start a new life; the book is set along the beaches of Nantucket, and the ease of reading combined with the magnificent beauty of the story makes The Great Lenore the perfect book to take with you to the pool or the beach this summer.

You can find great deals on Amazon for both The Old Man and the Sea and The Great Lenore, and when you pick up these two titles and indulge in them during the summer, you will be able to understand exactly what people mean when they talk about their adventures reading those "perfect summer books"!

Incorporating Social Marketing into your Marketing Plans

Retaining a competitive edge is the main objective of almost every business. Direct competition usually has the resources to duplicate anything you do. They can come out with the same product or service, open another location next door to you, and market in the same ways as you do. Social marketing is the only true way for you to stay ahead of them in your line of business.

Social marketing combines a few different aspects in order to develop a consistent marketing technique. Most people hear social marketing and think that it directly correlates with marketing done through social media. This is a misconception. What they are thinking of is a different branch of marketing called social media marketing. Computers are not the sole way for businesses to socially market.

The main concept of social marketing revolves around the relationship you and your business has with customers. This relationship needs to be nurtured in every way possible. It could be done through face to face visits and meetings. E-mails and social media sites can also be used to keep in touch online. Take is on a case by case basis so you can determine which of these methods is best.

The rest will really take care of itself as long as you are sure to nurture the relationship you have with customers wherever possible. The second part of this marketing method involves customers spreading the word about your business. If they are happy with your business, then they will tell others in their life about you. Sales opportunities through referrals will be a direct result. Converting this referrals to sales falls solely on you.

The greatest benefit of social marketing is that it doesn't involve using capital. This type of marketing was done in ancient greece and other ancient cultures throughout history. It has been given its name just recently however. Social marketing should be at the center of your business marketing plan since the only cost involved is some extra effort on your part.
