Taking Care of Your Kitchen Knives

Are your familiar with the best way to take care of your kitchen knives? Most people make the mistake of tossing their knives into the dishwasher. You can use these tips to help your knives keep a better edge.

The best thing you can do is stop with the dishwasher and hand wash all your knives. This is a double whammy for your knives. The blades can be dulled or damaged from being bumped into other silverware in the dishwasher. High temperatures in the dishwasher can also reak havoc on knives with wooden handles. You can get splitting of your wood handles if you continue to wash them in your dishwasher.

Frequently oil wooden handles that are on your knives. This will help your wood remain conditioned and help them not crack through years of use. After you wash your knives dry them thoroughly and then oil your wooden handles very lightly with mineral oil or with a nut oil such as walnut oil.

Use a good cutting board such as wood, bamboo, or polyethylene. These materials are ideal because they do not damage the blade and help to keep them sharper for longer. Always avoid cutting on glass, or marble cutting boards. These boards are great for presentation, but are horrible on your knife blades.

Store your blades so that they are not able to nock into other things such as other knives or utensils. Knife blocks are ideal as they hold each blade safely, minimizing damage. Another option is purchasing a case to hold your knives.

If you plan to purchase a high quality set of knives, make sure to learn how to properly care for them first. Knives that are higher quality are more expensive and you will want to care for them correctly to keep their blades pristine.
