Keeping Your Hair From Getting Damaged By Chlorine

If you have a pool (or if you spend any significant amount of time in pools during the summer), one of the biggest effects it can have on you – even greater than the ability it will give you to get in shape, or to get your body tan – is that your hair can get seriously damaged as a result of all the exposure to chlorine. And while people who have treated or colored hair typically think about this aspect of the pool, most others do not; regardless of whether you have short hair or long hair, however – colored or natural – you still need to be aware of protecting your hair from the havoc the chlorine can wreak.

The good news is that it will not be difficult for you to keep your hair from getting damaged while swimming, as it will simply take you remembering a few simple steps – the first of which is that you soak your hair with fresh water before you get into the pool. If you use water from a hose, or even from a sink in your house, and soak your hair before you venture into the pool, you will not soak up nearly as much chlorine in your hair while you are swimming.

If you will be spending long stretches of time staying in the pool – or if you are going to be getting in and out of the pool a lot, for long enough that your hair dries – you will want to continue putting water in your hair before you get back into the pool, and in the end you will want to rinse out your hair as well.

The last step to keeping your hair from getting damaged by excessive exposure to chlorine is to simply wash your hair; even if you do not usually wash your hair on a daily basis, it will be important to switch to a daily washing if you are using a pool each day, as this will help you to get rid of the built-up chlorine in your hair, and will keep your hair happy and healthy despite all that time in the pool!
