Easy Ways To Lower Your Cholesterol By Changing Your Diet

If you have high cholesterol, you are putting yourself at a number of health risks that could be easily avoided. Not only is high cholesterol bad for the heart and the body's circulatory system, but high cholesterol also increases the risk of Alzheimer's. As bodily and cognitive degeneration are both potential side effects of high cholesterol, it is important to know how to lower your cholesterol if it is high, and how to keep it at a good level if it is already there.

By paying attention to what you eat, you can easily and effectively lower your cholesterol. These four foods are all good for lowering your cholesterol.

1) High fiber foods such as oat bran and oatmeal: you can lower your cholesterol by eating these foods, because these food have soluble fiber in them. Other foods that have soluble fiber include bananas and pears. By getting five to ten grams of soluble fiber per day, you will vastly improve your cholesterol levels. You can find four grams of soluble fiber in just one banana; you can find six grams of soluble fiber in one bowl of oatmeal.

2) Omega-3 fatty acids: you will most commonly find omega-3 fatty acids in such foods as fish. Because fish can help to reduce your blood pressure and can also lessen the risk of blood clots, doctors recommend eating at least two servings of fish per week.

3) Walnuts and almonds: As long as you are not eating nuts that are salted or sugar-coated, such nuts as walnuts, almonds, and other nuts can reduce the risk of heart disease.

4) Olive oil: by taking two tablespoons of olive oil per day, you can leave your good cholesterol untouched while lowering your bad cholesterol. Extra virgin olive oil is the best, as it is the least processed of all available options.

You can do plenty to lower your cholesterol, even outside of changes to your diet. But learning the good foods to eat, as well as the foods that you should avoid, is a good starting point for lowering your cholesterol, and to lead a healthier lifestyle as a result.
