One of the Rarest Achievements in Sports

Many feats that are considered very difficult are offered by the wide world of sports. Winning the world cup in soccer is so hard considering the chance to do so is only offered once every four years. An Olympic gold medal for teams from various countries is looked at in much the same light. On the personal level there are even more achievements that are incredible. A large portion of these individual feats are what makes the game of baseball so enjoyable.

The amount of personal achievements in baseball considered to be incredible seems numerous, but there are contexts that need to be considered. Career long achievements are the overwhelming majority of them. Winning 300 games, hitting 500 home runs, and striking out 3,000 hitters all take long careers to accomplish. Yet baseball has feats that can be accomplished in a single game that are among the most difficult in all of sports.

Hitting for the cycle is considered one of them. Another is throwing a no hitter. Both of these accomplishments are tremendously difficult to complete. Yet one stands above all of the rest; the perfect game. The rarest feat in all of sports is what a pitcher throwing a perfect game is often considered. Thousands of baseball games are played each year and baseball has been around for over a hundred years. Using just your toes and fingers you would be able to count the amount of times that this feat has been completed though.

There have literally been decades that have passed with no perfect games thrown. In the past few years there have been a rash of perfect games, but this is an anomaly. 10 years, or longer, may pass before another one is thrown. Reading of perfect games is great since they are so extremely rare. Michael Coffey wrote a book about this feat called 27 Men Out Baseball's Perfect Games. Each of baseball's perfect games are detailed with great care and is worth the time taken to read it.
