How To Hire The Right People
You might have heard horror stories of nightmare employees. In fact, if it is your job to hire employees, it is likely that you have encountered one or two nightmare employees of your own. The reaction to nightmare employees can be to wonder, "How on earth did this person get to be this way?" But a better reaction would be the introspective one, asking, "Why on earth did I hire this person?" Of course, hiring is not just about avoiding the nightmare employee; it is also about hiring the employee who will become a prize of yours down the road. It is about finding those special employees who will benefit the company in a number of ways, employees who can be promoted again and again. How can you go about making sure you hire such employees? It is really quite simple. The hiring process begins with the resume. Begin by cutting out the unqualified applicants; it might be easy to just interview everyone, but in the long run it will save you time and headaches to narrow down your field. Take the time to call applicants you are not quite sure about; after all, you'll be happy you did if you were thinking about throwing an application away, and this person ends up being a prize employee, and you will likewise be happy if you were thinking about scheduling an interview and you find out it would have been a big waste of time. Finally, take notice of the attention the applicant paid to their resume; if their resume is sloppy, how do you think that applicant will be as an employee? When you interview, make sure you focus on the applicant's intelligence and attitude. Someone with fewer accomplishments but a good mind and a good attitude is more likely to do a great job for you than someone with lots of accomplishments and a bad attitude. Finally, during the interview, let the interviewee ask some questions. In this way, you can gain a greater understanding of the ways in which this person's mind works, and you can get to know them better. Future "prize employees" are likely to be full of intelligent questions, and anyway, allowing them to ask questions helps you get to know them better. There is so much that goes into making a successful business run, but the hiring process is one of the most important aspects of all. After all, a successful business begins with employees, and for those in charge of hiring employees, it all begins with them.
