The Benefits Of The Cold Call
One technique of the sales world that has been around for ages is the cold call. It is also one of the most widely ridiculed! This is the case for a number of reasons, but one of the primary reasons is because a lot of people just plain do not like getting cold calls. In fact, most people out there don't much appreciate having anything at all "sold" to them! You have probably been at the wrong end of a bad cold call once or twice yourself. And by knowing this, you already know the biggest key to cold calling: Do not do it the way everyone else does! You have already lost the battle if someone picks up and thinks, "Oh, great - another cold call." Instead, you need to figure out how to cold call differently. The first thing you have to do is put in your time researching. A little research can go a long way, and can save you a lot of time. Instead of calling people blindly - as if putting a scarf over your eyes at the firing range - research can help you call in a more focused manner. There are plenty of avenues by which you can gather good information to help your cold calls, but research and studies of your own are the most valuable of all. When the time comes to make the call, have confidence. One of the best ways to improve confidence - in fact, one of the best ways to improve your overall success - is to have a script. Once you have a script, stick to it! The script should not be word-for-word, but you need to know the general idea of what you will say and where you will take the conversation. You can refine your script over time as well. Add things onto the script when you find that they work. When you find something in particular that does not work, take it out of the script. As you become more practiced, you can customize your script depending on who you talk to. Maybe you will want to soften things up when speaking to a small business owner. Maybe stiffen up a bit - becoming more formal - when speaking with a high-ranking executive. The more cold calls you make, the more adept you will be at making adjustments. Some companies have decided to cut cold calls out of their strategy altogether, claiming that they no longer work. But with the proper use of cold calls, they can actually benefit your business a lot!
