ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary series is one of the best pieces of film making in the last year or so. The 30th anniversary was the reason these films were created and they eclipsed any kind of expectations placed on them. This series focused on sports stories that haven't been told in the past or have been forgotten since they have been told. Both film fans and sports fans were instantly taken aback by these stories as they were told. Intriguing stories and heart wrenching situations were easily connected with. Maybe the saddest of the stories that were retold is the story of the Wayne Gretzky trade. Gretzky is by far the best player to ever play hockey. He won multiple Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers where he started his career. Throughout his career Gretzky totaled the most points in history, as well as the most assists and goals. The players that trail him in each of these categories are not even close to his numbers. The people that trail him are laughably far behind his career totals. Many could not understand why he would have ever been traded. This would have been similar to Chicago trading Michael Jordan after he won three championships with them. However Edmonton realized early on that the money Gretzky wanted to be paid would not fit into their capabilities going forward. If they satisfied his desires regarding pay they couldn't surround him with the appropriate pieces. So the owner of the LA Kings made many offers to Edmonton. After much discussion they came to an agreement on a trade. History tells the rest of the story. The answering of many long time questions was done by 30 for 30 through the different interviews and angles they explored throughout the special. Hockey has never seen a short film made about it that was this great. 30 for 30 did this for many different sports stories and created amazing short films in their own right. The film industry has recognized many of them with some very prestigious awards.http://bluerose.jamesloving.com/
