How To Choose The Right Bird Feeder For You

Anyone who has ever gone shopping for a bird feeder has probably been surprised to find how many options there are. The great number of choices can seem downright overwhelming, in stores from Target and Walmart to Lowes and Home Depot and even on Amazon! How are you supposed to know which bird feeder is the right one for you, and which one will attract the kinds of birds you hope to attract? This guide can help you better understand your choices if you have been wanting to purchase a bird feeder, and have not been able to figure it all out.

The most basic form of bird feeder is the platform feeder, on which the seeds are simply poured, and birds can land to eat. These feeders are great for songbirds, and for other larger birds as well. At the same time, however, there is a distinct problem with platform feeders, and it is how easily squirrels are able to get to the food available, making it disappear rapidly. If you decide that a platform feeder is the right choice for you, you will have to make certain you hang it in a place that will keep squirrels from accessing it.

The tube feeder is another one of the most popular feeders, with one of the positives of a tube feeder being that squirrels cannot get to the seeds as easily, and with an added bonus of a tube feeder easily being able to feed several birds at once. One negative of the tube feeder, however, is that larger birds cannot use them very easily; this means that you will be limiting the variety you will attract at your feeder. Furthermore, tube feeders need to be emptied, dismantled, and cleaned once every two weeks, which can be quite a hassle.

There are also specialty feeders that are designed to attract certain birds such as hummingbirds or woodpeckers if you have a certain bird in mind. Such feeders will not, however, cure your squirrel problem, and furthermore, such feeders require specialty bird food to go with them.

While having a bird feeder in your yard can be fun and entertaining, you will never experience this fun or entertainment if you are unable to figure out which feeder to buy! Once you learn which feeder is right for you, you will finally be all set to go.
