Primer on Ferrets

Ferrets act like the clowns of the animal world. They have an amazing ability as little fur balls of energy, to make you laugh. Ferrets like cats are fairly easy to care for. Before buying, make sure to check with your city, that they allow them for pets. Towns may have ordinances against having them, or require certain vacinations before allowing them.

However, unlike a cat, you will need to keep them in a cage when you are unable to keep a close eye on them. A multilevel cage, makes a great addition for them, allowing your ferret plenty of room to play around. Ferrets should be out of their cage as much as possible in order to wear themselves out and become socialized. By socializing them, they become confortable with people and other things in their environment.

Ferrets can be trained to go potty in a special litter pan. Ferrets tend to prefer corners for their bathroom needs. If you want to increase the likelyhood of them using a litter pan, you could look into a special corner litter pans.

Make sure to only feed your them ferret food and not human food, even for treats. Make sure to purchase food that is specially made for ferrets and not for cats or dogs. Yogies for Ferrets are a great ferret specific treat that work great for training. It is highly recommended that a supplemental vitamin be given along with their daily food. You can look at either ferretvit gel or a ferretone liquid.

One of the best things you can do before you purchase a ferret is to read as much as you can about them before you decide to jump in and buy one. Both Ferrets For Dumbies, or Training Your Pet Ferret are good references to help you learn more about the topic.

It is always a great idea to learn as much as you can about your pet before you purchase one.
