"The Catcher In The Rye," by JD Salinger

There are plenty of great options to choose from when it comes to selecting books to read from the annals of classic American literature. But when it comes to finding the most beloved and enduring book of all, you may not need to look any further than JD Salinger's "The Catcher In The Rye."

You just might want to pick up a copy of this wonderful classic yourself if you have never yet read it - especially after you learn a little more about it!

This novel was published at the beginning of the 1950s - in 1951 - and it was not long before it became one of the most popular books of the decade. Salinger was already fairly well-known at the time when "The Catcher In The Rye" was published, as he had published a number of stories in such publications as "The New Yorker" - but this was his first novel.

And as it turned out, "The Catcher In The Rye" ended up being the last novel that Salinger ever published as well.

"The Catcher In The Rye" follows several days in the life of Holden Caulfield, and it is considered to be one of the great coming of age tales in the history of literature.

Caulfield is a young kid who lives with the cynicism of someone much older, and who has recently been kicked out of his school in New York City. Instead of returning home and telling his parents that he has been kicked out, Caulfield decides to spend a few days in New York City. This book is incredibly absorbing and fast-paced, in spite of the fact that there is nothing one can claim as this book's "plot."

The generation of readers who first fell in love with "The Catcher In The Rye" and Salinger's work eagerly awaited his next novel.

But even though Salinger continued to write constantly - and even though he published a few more short stories - he never did publish a second novel.

The mystique of Salinger's writing and of his only novel was heightened even more by the way in which he had disappeared from the public eye. And since it's publication in 1951, "The Catcher In The Rye" has continued its popularity, as it annually sells around 250,000 copies and has sold over 65 million copies in its time.
