Does Aromatherapy Really Provide Health Benefits?

image

Have you thought about using aromatherapy, but weren't sure if it was all a bunch of hooey? Have any doctors or scientists looked into aromatherapy? The answer is yes: there have been studies on aromatherapy, with exciting conclusions.

Many people use aromatherapy to create a sense of calm or to change their mood. You can actually evoke very specific physical and emotional reactions with scent. Smell is a powerful sense; it goes directly to the emotional center of your brain, creating very distinct reactions. That’s why you feel nostalgic when you smell your mother’s perfume (even in a different location, on a different person) or freshly cut grass.

One medical study proved that lavender evokes specific reactions in the body. Lavender actually calms you physically by lowering your blood pressure and slowing your heart rate. Many massage therapists use lavender essential oils in their lotions, oils, and to diffuse in their offices. Many geriactric units are starting to use lavender to calm and soothe dementia patients. Another proven scent is geranium; it also relaxes the body is a similar way to lavender.

The scent of peppermint has also been studied scientifically. Peppermint sharpens your mental focus, enabling you to concentrate and feel alert. In one study, kids who chewed peppermint gum while taking tests performed better than students who chewed any other flavor gum.

Another fun aromatherapy scent is grapefruit esssential oil, which is said to work as an appetite suppressant. In one study, it was discovered that men who were asked to guess a woman’s age after meeting her guessed her as younger if she was wearing grapefruit essential oils than if she wasn’t wearing any scent.

However, not all aromatherapy products work the same. Your body won't have the same response to a synthetic product as an essential oil. And you'll want to choose high grade essential oils off the knock off low grade oils. You can buy the expensive high grade essential oil and then use just a teensy bit in a base oil like almond oil or in a lotion.
