Keeping Notes As You Write

If you do any kind of writing, it can sometimes be difficult to keep your phrasing and approach consistent. Regardless of whether you dabble in fiction writing, write for your job, or just write for fun, keeping notes as you write can be a tremendous boon. And when it comes to those projects that stretch over a great span of time, this is more true than ever; after all, you would much rather get things right while writing than have to hope to fix everything when you go back to edit.

From a reader's standpoint, nothing is more difficult to follow than something that does not have consistent themes; because of this, keeping notes on themes is extremely important. When it comes to creating themes for the story, term paper, or market analysis you are writing, you have to be aware that you cannot force them into existence. In fact, when you start writing for a project, you may not even know what the themes will be; but as you work, uncover them, and carry them throughout.

The technicalities of the writing are also important elements to pay attention to, such as the tone of the writing and the tenses you are using. If the tone of your writing switches from formal to informal to playful to formal again, and so on, all throughout the project, the reader will be confused. If the tense of the writing or the voice of the narrative do not remain consistent, you will also find that the reader will have a very difficult time following along.

Finally, as you write, there will be things that will pop into your head for use later in the project on which you are working. Oftentimes, people tell themselves, "That's good, I'll remember that," but when it comes time to recall it, those thoughts have disappeared. You should always keep an open notebook or Word document open when you write, in which you can take notes, as ideas tend to flow most smoothly while you are writing.

Writing can be a long, difficult process at times, but the more organized you are, the easier it becomes; no matter what kind of writing you do, keeping notes as you write will help you stay organized!
