Pets That Are Good For Kids

Maybe you have decided that it is time to get a pet for your children, but you feel that a dog might be overwhelming, or you are otherwise unable to get a dog. Besides the fact that a puppy can be practically as much work as an extra child, you also have to consider the fact that - even though your children might tell you that this will not be the case - you will actually end up being the only one who takes care of it; or, on the other hand, you might actually want a puppy, but you might live in a place that does not allow them. There are plenty of great alternatives to dogs, no matter your reasons for searching elsewhere. These are some of the best alternatives.

Fishes are easy to take care of, and they are not messy, which makes them great pets for kids. After you explain to your child how important it is that they not overfeed their fish, you will be able to leave them to take care of the fish on your own.

Much like fishes, hamsters don't make much of a mess, as they remain confined to their cage. Hamsters are very easy to take care of, but keep in mind that your children may desire a pet they can watch in action, and hamsters typically burrow and sleep during the day.

Finches are very pretty birds, and they are good for children because they are friendly and low-maintenance. Some bird owners will complain of the mess that birds make, but as long as you keep the bird in its cage, it is easy to clean up after it by simply replacing the newspaper at the bottom of its cage every couple of days. The only serious complaint about finches is the noise they can make, but as long as you do not keep them in a bedroom, this should not be a problem.

Cats are a great, low-maintenance alternative to dogs. Cats are generally self-sufficient, looking after themselves without the need for you to let them in an out, take them to a groomer, take them for walks, et cetera. Cats are also friendly and often playful, which makes them truly great for kids.

Perhaps your family will graduate to a dog in time, but until then, you can let your kids learn the basics of pet care with one of these simple options.
