It is easy to start neglecting all things “school-related” now that summer is here, but if you are a high school student (or if you are the parent of a high school student!), summer is a great time to start preparing for the future of getting into the college you dream of attending in the future. It is not until about the senior year of high school that most students begin to think about getting into college, but if you start early (and honestly, “early” means that you should start in the summer before your freshman year of high school!) you will be in much better shape when it comes time to apply to college. The most important part of your college entrance packet will be your scores on the standardized tests (the ACT and the SAT), and even though you might know this, you might not have known that you can actually start taking these tests long before you have to; as early as your freshman year of high school, you should begin to study for these tests and take them every once in a while. Being involved in extracurricular activities for several years leading up to college will also go a long way in making your application stand out from those around it; whether you are interested in sports, chemistry, chess, debate, or simply in helping out in your community, the more extracurricular activities you can list on your application, the better it will be for you! And while many people tend to think that grades are the most important thing of all, it is actually more important that you take courses that will look good on your application to your dream college; this means that it will be better for you to take challenging classes and advanced placement courses and have a more difficult time getting straight “A”s than to take easy courses and have an “A” in every one. There are certainly plenty of things that go into determining whether or not you are able to get into the college of your choice, but if you start early and keep these things in mind, it will go a long way in setting you up for success when you finally reach that point. http://bluerose.jamesloving.com/
